18.09.202619:30:00UTC+00Speculators Deepen Bearish Bets on S&P 500 Futures, CFTC Data Show

Speculative traders have increased their bearish exposure to the U.S. stock market, with net short positions in S&P 500 futures widening notably, according to the latest data on CFTC S&P 500 speculative net positions.

The indicator, which tracks the net difference between long and short speculative positions, declined from -76.0K contracts previously to -100.5K contracts as of the latest update on 18 September 2026. This shift signals that traders classified as speculators are holding a significantly larger net short position on the S&P 500 than before, indicating growing pessimism or hedging against potential downside in the U.S. equity benchmark.

The move deeper into negative territory underscores a more cautious stance toward U.S. stocks among futures market participants, with speculative flows leaning further away from bullish positioning for the S&P 500.
